FIELD NOTES / ILLUSTRATIVE STORY

The launch went well. Then the familiar faces ran out.

An illustrative story about the gap between a product launch and a repeatable marketing plan.

01

The launch worked. The system wasn’t there yet.

Imagine a founder who builds a useful tool for a problem they know well. Their own business uses it. People in their network ask about it. The first version goes live, and familiar names appear in the sign-up list.

That is a promising beginning. It is also a limited audience. When the people who already know the founder have heard the announcement, the sign-up page gets quieter.

02

More activity is not automatically more direction.

The founder tries posts, articles and a few campaigns. Each task looks reasonable on its own. But the homepage speaks to one audience, the content attracts another and the first email never explains what to do inside the product.

The problem in this scenario is not evidence that the product will succeed or fail. It is a reason to examine the path between discovery, understanding and first use.

03

Start with the next useful action.

Who is the product for? What problem brings them to the page? What should they understand before signing up? What should they be able to do first?

A clear answer can guide the website, the topics worth covering and the follow-up new users receive. The pieces have a shared job.

04

Build a repeatable rhythm.

A plan becomes useful when someone is responsible for making, reviewing and improving the work. A regular review can look at where visitors arrive, where they hesitate and which next step needs attention.

There is no guaranteed ending to this story. The point is a clearer way to organize the work, rather than another tactic added to an already busy week.
