FIELD NOTES / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Before you publish another post, choose the next step.

A short working guide to connecting your message, your page and your follow-up.

01

Name the person the page is for.

Write a plain-language description of the buyer and the problem that brings them to you. A page that tries to speak to everyone often leaves the next action unclear.

For a software product, the next action might be a trial or demo. For a local business, it might be a quote request or appointment enquiry.

02

Choose one primary next step.

Decide what the page should ask a visitor to do. Give that action a clear label and explain what happens next.

Secondary links can answer questions without competing with the main path.

03

Follow the same promise through.

The first email, form or onboarding step should continue the promise made on the page. Avoid changing the subject just as someone begins to engage.

Check the words, the destination and the actual experience, not just the button color.

04

Review the whole path.

Visit the page on a phone. Follow the links. Read the next message. Note the places where you need context that is missing.

Use that review to choose the next improvement. A clear diagnosis is more useful than a bigger list of tactics.
